As a parent you have perhaps already noticed something different about your child. When you receive the actual label "Learning Disability". You don't quite understand, your emotional and might feel alone. You have so many questions. Is the school going to answer all of them? Is your school following the Individualized Educational Program (IEP)? Are they considering YOUR child's specific needs? Will they be willing to change the teaching to accommodate your child's learning style?
The GOOD NEWS: Your Not Alone...
I have been processing this label for the past six years. We have tried so many things to "FIX" my daughter, modifications, tutoring, vision therapy, not to mention the time (years) and money. I have come to the realization that she doesn't need to be "FIXED" she will be fine. We have decided to focus on her strengths, music, math, science and art. She has blossomed with confidence. (Don't get me wrong, we still work on her reading, writing, spelling and comprehension). We have tried to build on her strengths while working around her disabilities.
Every child needs to grow up feeling competent and loved. When children have learning disabilities, parents may need to work harder at developing their children's self-esteem and relationship-building skills. But self-esteem and good relationships are as worth developing as any skill.
I would love to hear from others and how they have processed the "LABEL".
