I wanted to follow up on my post from 2/7/08 regarding my IEP meeting. As suspected my youngest child does have a Learning Disability. This is a mixed blessing. I would rather her not be labeled, tested, pulled out and not to mention all the "BS" IEP crap. Blessing we caught this one a year and half sooner then her sister. We had requested the testing back in November (1st grade - she was showing the same signs as sister) this time I was not going to take the "W AIT AND FAIL" option (sister, I really didn't understand and trusted the teachers suggesting to wait, I WAS SURE WRONG AND SO WERE THEY). My original IEP was in December which results showed low IQ, and quit a few other low areas but not enough discrepency in the achievement and ability.....I was amazed she didn't qualify for anything but reading lab????? When I returned home I pulled out her sisters report and noticed they didn't test the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (CTOPP).The results were emailed to us today to review prior to my meeting on Monday (I REQUESTED THE RESULTS). When a parent and the teachers see something that may bring red flags, why does it take so long, the delays are only hurting the child. I was so pissed off in my first IEP with the achievement and ability crap. This anger made me dig up information about the (CTOPP). As far as the TEAM was concerned the meeting was done... Until they received my phone call and had to proceed with additional testing. I stressed in November that we see the same signs as her sister and she has a LD. Why the hell did I have to ask for the (CTOPP)? What about these parents that don't have the experience and trust the teachers and administrators (they are the professionals and the have a TEAM)? I would love to hear from any educators that would help me understand the "WAIT TO FAIL" formula. I am still completely puzzled.
